Heading to Amsterdam in December? Then get ready for an experience like no other!
Overflowing with cosy cafes, charm and a whole host of events, it’s one of the best European cities to explore during the festive period. Whether you’re going for the first time or as a regular visitor (like me), you’re in for a treat.
If you’ve never been to the city, you may feel a little overwhelmed when it comes to planning your winter getaway. Luckily, I’ll share tons of expert advice to help you plan your ideal adventure!
After countless visits, I’ve become well-versed in all things Amsterdam. From the top things to do to hidden gems and everything in between, I’ve got you covered.
This post will cover all you need to know to get the most from your trip. I’ll cover what to pack, key events, activities you can’t miss and how much you can expect to spend as you visit during the low season.
Let’s jump right in…
Is the Netherlands worth visiting in December?
Absolutely, the Netherlands is well worth visiting in December! While this time of year brings colder temperatures and shorter daylight hours, it also boasts a unique charm and a jolly atmosphere that adds to the country’s allure.
Places like Haarlem, Amsterdam and Rotterdam transform into winter wonderlands with enchanting Christmas markets. These markets showcase an array of artisan crafts, delicious treats and snug vibes ideal for getting into the festive spirit.
If that’s not enough, the streets, canals and historic buildings are adorned with twinkling lights and decorations. This creates a magical ambience throughout the country that makes it a dream to explore.
Some areas may still be busy, but December typically sees fewer tourists. This means you can hit up attractions without chaotic crowds and long queues.
Whether you’re indulging in a cup of steaming hot chocolate along a canal or immersing yourself in the city’s renowned museums, I guarantee your winter escape to the Dutch capital (and the rest of the Netherlands) will be unforgettable!
Is December a good time to visit Amsterdam?
December can be a lovely time to visit Amsterdam. However, it largely depends on personal preference and what you want from your trip to the Dutch capital.
At this time of year, the city is filled with sparkling lights, decorations and lively Christmas markets, it’s a great place to get hyped up for the festive period.
Despite the bustling atmosphere, it’s pretty quiet in terms of tourism. As somewhere that’s typically overrun with tourists, this can be a good time to truly experience Amsterdam without the crowds.
Is Amsterdam expensive in December?
Amsterdam can be expensive, but it’s much cheaper in December than visiting during spring or summer.
To compare, back in the summer, I was looking for a bed for one night. Even in a dorm room, prices we close to €100 (which is wild). I’ve just looked for accommodation in December and beds in dorm rooms start at just €20. What a bargain!
If you rest your head at a hostel and take advantage of free things to do, you could easily visit Amsterdam on a shoestring budget.
Another thing to keep in mind is the cost of transportation. Although public transport costs stay the same, that can’t be said for taxis. If you’re using Uber or local taxi services to get around, they may charge a premium on certain dates such as Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year.
However, with such a fab public transport network, do you really need to rely on taxis and Uber? Probably not…

Amsterdam weather in December
The weather in Amsterdam during December is windy and cold, often accompanied by rainfall. As such, it’s wise to carry an umbrella and raincoat in case you get caught in a downpour.
You can expect daytime temperatures to hover between 2°C and 7°C with overcast skies and strong winds. While slithers of sunshine may break through the clouds, it’s best to pack layers to adapt where needed.
During December, daylight hours are quite minimal. At the start of the month, you’ll get just under eight hours of daylight each day, which later decreases as the month progresses.
There are lots of reasons to visit Amsterdam during the holiday period. Just make sure you wrap up warm and come prepared for rubbish weather!

Tips for visiting in December
Pack warm clothing
As we’ve discussed already, packing warm clothes is a must. It’s also worth noting that you’ll be walking a lot in Amsterdam. In fact, I often walk over 20,000 steps per day on my frequent trips to the city.
When you’re doing so much walking, you can get pretty warm despite how cold it is outside. That’s where layers come in. By carrying a few layers, you can regulate your temperature throughout the day depending on your chosen activities and how you’re feeling. Preparation is key!
Carry your camera (or phone)
Amsterdam is very photogenic and I’ve taken thousands upon thousands of photos on previous trips. I just can’t help myself! With photo opportunities around each corner, this city is a dream for your Instagram feed.
If you have one, make sure you bring your camera on your Amsterdam adventure. If not, just use your phone. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
Consider buying an Iamsterdam City Card
Fancy saving lots of cash in Amsterdam? You may want to buy an Iamsterdam City Card! If you’ll be visiting lots of museums, hopping on a canal cruise and hiring a bike in the capital, it’s well worth checking out.
To make an informed decision on whether or not you should one, read this post.
