Although it’s not expected, it’s common practice to leave a 10% tip if you’re particularly satisfied with the service.

As a solo traveller, I’ve found bar staff in Amsterdam to be incredibly friendly. In almost every bar I’ve visited, the bartenders have started friendly conversations. One even sang Happy Birthday to me and offered a round of shots to the whole bar so I could celebrate in style!

Compared to restaurants, there is less expectation to tip bartenders in bars and pubs. Despite that, if servers (like the one above) go the extra mile to ensure you have a great time, you should strongly consider leaving a small tip or rounding up your bill.

When it comes to tipping in Amsterdam hotels, yet again, it’s not mandatory. However, it’s considered polite to express your appreciation in certain circumstances.

For example, you may want to tip hotel porters who assist with your luggage, friendly reception staff who answer your questions and cleaning staff who ensure your room is clean.

This is especially true if they massively contributed to your overall experience of staying at the hotel. Furthermore, if they support you during a problem, tipping is the least you can do.

Tipping hotel staff is a little different. If a porter has helped with your bag, the standard tip is a couple of euros. For cleaners, the average tip is €5 per clean. Lastly, if you’ve received fantastic service from reception staff in terms of recommendations and restaurant bookings, you should tip more.

Tour guides often put a lot of effort into giving you an interesting and informative tour. The Dutch capital is no different. There are lots of fab tours in Amsterdam!

While you’re free to tip your guide if you’ve had a great time, it’s not common practice if you’ve already paid for the tour. 

On the other hand, things like free walking tours are tip-based. This means that the guide only gets paid what travellers choose to tip at the end, they don’t get paid an hourly rate. These tours typically run for 2-3 hours and cover the highlights and hidden gems of Amsterdam.

Although you’re not required to pay a penny, it’s a respectable thing to do if you have enjoyed the tour. Especially since the guides share advanced knowledge and insider tips that can have a huge impact on your trip to Amsterdam! 

Should you tip taxi drivers in Amsterdam? 

Similarly to most services in Amsterdam, you’re not expected to tip taxi drivers. However, if you are using Uber in the Dutch capital, they do give you the choice to tip your driver if you are particularly happy with the service.
