How to get to Amsterdam
Getting to Amsterdam by plane
Most people across the globe will opt to fly to Amsterdam. With low-cost airlines such as Ryanair and Easyjet, you can often find cheap deals if you’re heading to Amsterdam on a budget.
Upon arrival, the best way to get into the city centre is to catch the train from Schiphol Airport to Amsterdam Central. It takes around 15 minutes and costs €6. Trains run every 5-10 minutes which makes it super easy to get around.
Getting to Amsterdam by train
If you live in the UK or somewhere else in Europe, you might decide to travel to Amsterdam by train. This is sometimes more convenient than flying as you’ll arrive directly at Amsterdams’ main train station.
However, you’ll want to consider the journey duration from wherever you are travelling from as train times can vary greatly. Plus, if you’re in the UK, trains don’t have the best reputation for running on time!
Where to stay in Amsterdam
So you’ve secured your flight or train tickets, purchased travel insurance and started daydreaming about your trip. Next, you need a place to stay! Luckily, Amsterdam has a range of options that cater to all budgets.Â

Friday: Explore some Amsterdam highlights and enjoy the nightlife
Check out The Damrak
Situated a stone’s throw away from Amsterdam Central train station, The Damrak is one of the main streets in the city. As you stroll towards Dam Square, you’ll come across the picture-perfect gingerbread houses. This particular spot is (understandably) one of the most photographed spots in the whole city. Make sure you snap a few photos for Instagram as you pass by.
Wander around the Nine Streets
The Nine Streets (or De 9 Straatjes in Dutch) is a popular area to visit in Amsterdam. The delightful maze of picturesque lanes offers stylish boutiques, vintage stores and cosy cafes.
Whether you’re searching for unique fashion finds, handcrafted jewellery or one-of-a-kind homeware, you’re bound to find what you need. Taking in the atmosphere and charm of this well-loved Amsterdam neighbourhood is a must while in the city!
Admire art at the Van Gogh Museum
Located in the heart of Museumplein, the Van Gogh Museum celebrates one of the most famous painters in the world. Holding the largest collection of his works worldwide, the museum is a must for art enthusiasts and creative souls.
You’ll be taken on a captivating journey through the life and creative development of Van Gogh from his early works right up to his most famous pieces. It’s without a doubt one of the best art galleries in Amsterdam and well worth a visit during your time in the capital!
Make your own drinks at House of Bols
Conveniently located across the road from the Van Gogh Museum, cocktail-making at House of Bols is the ULTIMATE weekend activity in Amsterdam.
After an interactive tour complete with an audio guide, you’ll join a small group to mix up your own delicious cocktails. With the support of a House of Bols mixing expert, you’ll be a cocktail-making pro in no time!
Dine at a traditional Dutch restaurant
When you travel, trying the local food is a must. It’s one of the finest ways to immerse yourself in the culture. Unsurprisingly, there are several restaurants in Amsterdam that serve traditional Dutch cuisine. Depending on the environment you’re looking for, you may want to check out:
- Moeders: With a lovely focus on mothers, you simply must book a table at Moeders if you’re travelling with your mum.
- The Pantry: Serving traditional Dutch cuisine in a relaxing low-lit environment.
- Restaurant ‘t Zwaantje: Offering a cosy ambience, this is the perfect spot to dine after a day of travelling.
- De Silveren Spiegel: Enjoy some local dishes in a bright and elegant setting.
- Rijks: Treat yourself at one of the top Michelin Starred restaurants in Amsterdam.
Discover the history of Anne Frank House
Conveniently, Anne Franks House opens daily until 10pm. This means you can easily check off another Amsterdam attraction after you’ve enjoyed a tasty Dutch meal.
Offering a truly thought-provoking experience, Anne Frank House is an attraction of historical significance in The Netherlands. During your visit, you’ll see the secret annexe and gain a deeper understanding of the impact of World War II and the Holocaust.
Although it’s difficult to read about the horrors that Anne, her loved ones and many others suffered, I think it’s important to educate ourselves. The museum does an amazing job of showcasing key facts and important information to ensure you leave feeling well-informed.
Enjoy some drinks at the best bars in Amsterdam
After an emotional experience at Anne Frank House, it’s time to hit up some of the best bars in Amsterdam! The city is known for its nightlife; you can find an array of cosy pubs, sophisticated bars and wild nightclubs.
Whatever your preference, the Dutch capital has you covered. Plus, you can’t go on a weekend trip to Amsterdam without going out!
Personally, I prefer quiet cocktails and there are certainly many great cocktail bars in Amsterdam! If you’re on the hunt for a nightcap, you may want to try:
The bars I’ve listed above are ones I have personally tried and loved. Pulitzer’s Bar is perhaps my all-time favourite bar in Amsterdam. The drinks are delicious, the decor is stunning and the low-lit environment is ideal when you want to relax. Plus, the service was great. I can’t recommend it enough!
Saturday: Check out some of the best things to do in Amsterdam
Take a morning stroll through Vondelpark
Nestled in the heart of Amsterdam, a stroll through Vondelpark is the perfect way to start your day (ha, that rhymed). Before the city wakes up and the museums welcome their first visitors, make your way to the park for a relaxing walk.
Spanning 120 acres, there’s plenty of space to relax as you appreciate this peaceful escape in the middle of the city. With lots of greenery, walking paths and ponds, you could spend hours soaking up the calming atmosphere.
Check out the secret library at Rijksmuseum
Located nearby, the Rijksmuseum is one of the most visited museums in Amsterdam. As you step through the doors of its impressive entrance, you’ll understand why.
Not only does this popular Amsterdam attraction showcase art from world-renowned artists, but it’s an architectural gem in itself. Boasting a Gothic and Renaissance exterior with beautiful stained-glass windows and unique ceilings, the museum is a must-see for architecture enthusiasts!
But that’s not all! Inside the museum, you’ll have the chance to discover its secret library. Hidden away in a little corner, the Rijksmuseum library is a true hidden gem in Amsterdam. While you can opt to just admire the library from its balcony, you can also check out its preserved collection of books on a range of different topics.
Cruise the waters of Amsterdam on a canal tour
After spending a few hours at the Rijksmuseum, it’s time to check out another well-loved Amsterdam activity. Cruising the canals on a boat tour is a fantastic way to discover more about the Dutch capital. Across the road from the Rijksmuseum, Stomma canal cruises run regular hour-long tours of the city.
During your tour, you’ll gain a large insight into historical and cultural events that have shaped the city into what it is today. You’ll stop by some of the top Amsterdam attractions and spot some of the most photogenic areas of the city.
By the end of your cruise, you’ll have discovered more places that you may want to add to your Amsterdam bucket list.
Try the best fries in Amsterdam at Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx
After a morning of exploring, it’s time to stop for lunch. Less than 15 minutes away from the Rijksmuseum on foot, you’ll find Vlaams Friteshuis Vleminckx.
Apparently, this is where you’ll find the best Dutch fries in Amsterdam and after trying them myself, I can confirm they were delicious! You’ll have the option of choosing from over 30 toppings, but be prepared to queue as this is a popular spot.
Explore NDSM Wharf
Once you’ve fuelled up, head towards Amsterdam North. Although it’s an hour away from central Amsterdam, trust me when I say it’s an area worth exploring. Especially if you’re a creative person. As an artistic person myself, I wish I had spent longer than a few hours in NDSM Wharf.
The neighbourhood boasts colourful walls bursting with impressive street art. It’s also home to NDSM Loods – an old warehouse full of artist studios. As you wander around the area, you’ll see a collection of unique objects on display. It’s a place like no other in the city!
Visit the Straat Museum
Next door to NDSM Loods, the Straat Museum is one of the best art galleries in Amsterdam. Holding a large collection of murals and street art, the exhibits are truly remarkable.
The sheer size of the art on display allows you to study each small detail. You’ll discover an appreciation for the many hours that were poured into each piece and the talent each artist holds. With such an array of varied artwork, there’s something for everyone at the Straat Museum!
Enjoy dinner in North Amsterdam
Since you’re in the area, there are a number of fantastic spots to eat near NDSM Wharf. Depending on what you’re in the mood for, you might want to try:
- Pllek: With a focus on healthy and locally sourced ingredients, Pllek is perfect for health-conscious travellers. However, they also offer a unique vibe with a cool atmosphere.
- De Pizzabakkers NDSM: With almost perfect reviews on Google despite being newly opened, something tells me this pizza spot is going to be the best in town.
- Carroll’s: If you’re on the hunt for burgers, sandwiches or baked goods, this is the place to be!
Hit up the NXT Museum
After dinner (or tea as my fellow Northerners call it), it’s time to head to your final attraction of the day. Similarly to Anne Frank House, the NXT Museum is open quite late. This makes it easy to visit once you’ve enjoyed your final meal of the day.
What makes this museum a must-see is its unique exhibits, but unusual museums in Amsterdam seem to be the norm! During your visit, you’ll enjoy interactive installations and innovative displays that offer something different compared to your standard museum.
If you’re looking for unusual things to do in Amsterdam, you need to check this place out!
Sunday: Delve deeper into Dutch culture
Take a day trip to Zaanse Schans
After checking off some of the main sights and exploring NDSM, by now you’ll have a real feel for Amsterdam. While you could easily explore more of the city, I recommend escaping the hustle and bustle to spend some time in Zaanse Schans.
If you’re leaving Amsterdam in the evening, you have plenty of time to jump on a short train ride and explore more of the Netherlands. Zaanse Schans is the perfect place to do so!
Upon arrival, you’ll be transported back in time to the country’s historic and picturesque countryside. You’ll discover more about The Netherlands’ rich industrial heritage and see traditional crafts in practice by visiting the Zaans Museum, the weaver’s house and the clog workshop.
Check out my complete guide to Zaanse Schans for everything you need to know.
Tips for spending a weekend in Amsterdam
Plan your Amsterdam itinerary in advance
With so many amazing things to do in Amsterdam, arriving in the city can feel a little overwhelming. To avoid wasting any time, you should do your research in advance and plan precisely what you want to do.
Once you have an idea of the Amsterdam attractions you want to visit, get up a map and plan your days in order of location. For example, the Rijksmuseum and Vondelpark are quite close to each other. Furthermore, there is a canal cruise ticket office across the road from the museum. This is all extremely convenient as it avoids going back and forth on yourself.
By planning ahead, you’ll also know if you wish to visit museums that require pre-booking and can do so in advance before they all get booked up!
Make restaurant reservations
Talking of planning ahead, the same can be said for restaurants. During peak times, the best restaurants in Amsterdam can get booked up well in advance. If you’ve got your heart set on a particular place, I recommend booking a table a few weeks in advance.
Travel at your own pace
You might think that a weekend in Amsterdam isn’t enough time and for the most part, you’re right. However, Amsterdam isn’t going anywhere!
If you love the city so much, you can go back again and again. For example, I’ve visited the Dutch capital three times now and there are STILL things that I want to check off my Amsterdam bucket list.
If you prefer to take things slow, then take things slow. If you like to cram in as much as possible, that’s fine too! The beauty of travel is that you can explore at your own pace and do the things that interest you most.
FAQs about a weekend trip to Amsterdam
Is Amsterdam a good weekend break?
Absolutely! There’s a reason the Dutch capital is such a popular city to visit. Not only are there world-class museums and great food, but Amsterdam is a fantastic place for a night out. Although there is so much more to the city than its nightlife, the funky bars and lively clubs definitely make for a fun weekend adventure!
Is Amsterdam a cheap city break?
Honestly, not really. Compared to the likes of Eastern European cities like Budapest and Prague, Amsterdam is way more expensive. However, that isn’t to say that you can’t visit on a budget.
If you really want to, you can keep costs to a minimum by staying in a hostel and taking advantage of the free things to do in Amsterdam.
Are 2 nights in Amsterdam enough?
While a few days in Amsterdam is enough to see the highlights, it’s not enough to delve deeper into Dutch culture. If you want to visit more museums and explore further afield, you should plan to spend more time in the area.
If you’re spending less or more days in Amsterdam, check out my other Amsterdam itineraries:
How many days do you need for an Amsterdam city break?
Ideally, 3-5 days in Amsterdam gives you enough time to explore the city without rushing around like a headless chicken…
