29 Free Things to Do in Amsterdam (from a frequent visitor)
Last Updated on November 30, 2024 by Lauren Allen
When it comes to free things to do in Amsterdam, there’s plenty to keep you busy. If you’re visiting on a budget, you’ll be pleased to know that it’s totally doable.
Generally known as an expensive destination, this popular European city has a lot to offer from world-class museums and renowned festivals to a vibrant nightlife. However, you don’t need to spend a small fortune to enjoy your stay.
Taking advantage of free attractions allows you to keep costs down, but where do you start? If you’ve never been to the city, you may feel overwhelmed.
That’s where I come in! As a regular visitor to Amsterdam, I know the very best free activities on offer (having done most of them myself). From budget-friendly walking tours to funky street art, you can learn a lot without spending a dime.
Let’s get to it!
Free things to do in Amsterdam
1 | Admire views of The Damrak
Just a stone’s throw away from Central Station, checking out The Damrak is one of the top things to do in Amsterdam city centre. As one of the main streets in the city, it runs from the train station to Dam Square.
Lined with restaurants, souvenir shops and tour companies, it’s a busy place. However, it’s also home to the most photographed buildings in the city. You simply can’t pass by without snapping your own.
To find the exact spot in the photos below, head to Rederij Plas canal tour agency. Personally, I stop by here at least once on each trip to Amsterdam. I just can’t help myself.
2 | Check out Dam Square
About 5-10 minutes away on foot, Dam Square is a must-see while visiting Amsterdam. Although you’ll find several attractions such as the Royal Palace, Madame Tussauds and the New Church, these are paid attractions.
Regardless, they’re very much worth seeing from the outside. Plus, Dam Square is a great place to do a bit of people watching.
Fancy a view from above? Then visit the top floors of H&M. You can get some pretty shots of the square from this angle. Another thing I love is the Delft tiles displayed by the window as you overlook the square – so cool!
3 | Go for a stroll
The beauty of Amsterdam lies within its charming streets. Go for a wander with no destination in mind. That might sound weird, but there are so many lovely corners of the city. Going for a walk allows you to truly appreciate this well-loved destination.
Trust me, it’s worth doing even if you’re only in the Dutch capital for a day.
4 | Go window shopping
With so many beautiful boutiques in Amsterdam, you could spend all day strolling in and out of the city’s best shops. Selling everything from dreamy home decor to vintage clobber, there’s something for everyone.
If you can control your spending, hitting up a few shops allows you to take it slow and truly appreciate the vibe of the city. Just keep in mind that you may get tempted… I did warn ya!
5 | Visit Amsterdam City Archives
Despite being a regular visitor to the Dutch capital, I didn’t step foot inside Amsterdam City Archives until my most recent visit. Do I regret that? Absolutely!
Located (pretty much) across the road from Museum Van Loon and Foam Photography Museum, it’s easy to visit if you have a jam-packed itinerary.
Not only that, but it’s a true hidden gem that many people aren’t aware of. If you’re looking to escape crowds, this is the place to be.
Crammed full of information, it’s one of the best places to learn about Amsterdam. During your visit, you’ll discover tons of old photos, drawings and maps that give you an in-depth insight into the capital’s history.
If that wasn’t enough, the treasury (AKA the main reason to visit) has a gorgeous interior with tiles and a hand-painted ceiling. It’s worth seeing for that reason alone.
Top tip: To learn more about this unique attraction, consider joining their guided tour. They run every Sunday at 2pm and cost just €7.50 per person (under 16s go free).

6 | Watch the sunset from Nemo Science Museum
There are lots of lovely viewpoints in Amsterdam, but one of the best places to watch the sunset has to be Nemo Science Museum. Although the museum itself isn’t free, their rooftop terrace is.
Once you’ve climbed to the top, you can enjoy unobstructed views from all angles. Feeling peckish? You’ll be pleased to know they have a cafe that serves snacks and refreshments.
A quick note: Keep in mind that the rooftop is closed during New Year and King’s Day celebrations. It’s also closed during bad weather.
7 | Go on an Instagram mission
We all want nice holiday snaps to look back on and Amsterdam might just be one of the most photogenic cities in the world.
With tons of picturesque backdrops (such as the Damrak and the Rijksmuseum), you’re truly spoilt for choice. Pretty much everywhere you go, you’ll see a photo opportunity.
Check out my full guide to the best Instagram spots in Amsterdam (including some you likely haven’t heard of).
8 | Take in the vibes of the Red Light District
If you’re looking for free things to do in Amsterdam at night, exploring the Red Light District is one of the top activities. While you could easily check out the capital’s top cocktail bars or cosy up in a brown cafe, they’re certainly not free.
Taking a stroll through the Red Light District allows you to see this iconic neighbourhood at its most vibrant. With bold red lights, a bustling atmosphere and bars galore, it’s a popular spot for partygoers in Amsterdam.
But if you’re more interested in history and don’t mind spending some cash, taking a walking tour is a fab way to delve deep into the area. On this two-hour walking tour of the Red Light District, your guide will share exactly why this spot has become world-famous.
9 | Wander down Beurspassage
The Beurspassage is a picture-perfect passageway that connects The Damrak and Nieuwendijk. It’s easily one of the top free activities in Amsterdam thanks to its unique nautical displays.
With nods to fish, anchors and sailor wheels, this 19th-century walkway reflects the world-famous canals of Amsterdam. Boasting a colourful ceiling and fancy chandeliers, it’ll be hard to put down your camera.
One of the best things about Beurspassage is its location. Close to the Damrak, you can easily check it out no matter how long you’re visiting.
10 | Join a free walking tour
In terms of walking tours, there are many options in Amsterdam. If the Red Light District isn’t your thing, opt for a different tour instead. Free Walking Tours offer many tours of the city including:
- The classic tour: Learn as much as possible about this vibrant city.
- A tour all about Anne Frank: Discover more about the Frank family and what happened in Amsterdam during World War Two.
- The photography tour: Find all the best photo spots on this unique photography-focused walking tour.
- A foodie tour: Try local dishes with your fellow food lovers.
- The spooky tour: Gain insight into the dark side of the Dutch capital as you listen to scary stories.
- An alternative tour: Learn the story behind the city’s so-called coffee shops…
I’ve also joined many free tours with Sandeman’s New Europe over the years. If you fancy a two-hour tour that covers many of the cities highlights, they’re a great option. Although I haven’t done their Amsterdam tour, I’ve done many across Europe and can’t recommend them enough.
While the tours themselves are free, Free Walking Tours take a €2 booking fee. It’s also worth noting that if you can, you should pay a tip at the end of these tours. Check out this guide for tipping in Amsterdam.
11 | Explore the floating flower market (Bloemenmarkt)
If you’re visiting Amsterdam during tulip season, you need to check out the floating flower market. Although it’s open all year, this is one of the best times to see colourful blooms in all their glory.
While you could easily treat yourself to some tulip bulbs or souvenirs, you can also just soak up the vibes. There’s no need to buy anything if you’re low on cash.
12 | Admire beautiful buildings
Everywhere you go, you’ll find stunning buildings. Known for charming canal homes and impressive facades, architecture enthusiasts will love Amsterdam. But it’s not just the picture-perfect canal houses that stand out.
Structures such as Dam Square’s Royal Palace, Central Station and the Rijksmuseum are a true feast for the eyes. As you explore the city, make sure you stop by these impressive buildings and snap a photo or two. You won’t regret it!
13 | Check out Museumplein
Speaking of architecture, you can’t miss Museumplein. Home to many renowned museums, it’s one of the best parts of Amsterdam.
Located in the heart of the city, this square boasts many prominent buildings such as the Rijksmuseum, Moco Museum and the Stedelijk Museum. While the attractions themselves aren’t free, you can check out their exteriors free of charge.
14 | Visit the Rijksmuseum garden
Also in Museumplein, the Rijksmuseum garden is a nature lovers’ dream. This is especially true during spring and summer when the space comes to life with a colourful selection of lovely flowers. However, it’s nice to visit at any time of year.
If you’re lucky enough to get good weather, it’s a fab spot to relax with a book or do some people-watching.
15 | Hit up Amsterdam Public Library
Amsterdam Public Library is a must-see for book enthusiasts. This modern space houses thousands of titles to enjoy for free during your visit.
However, you don’t need to be a book fan to hit up the library. If you’re looking for free viewpoints, this is the place to be. You can see unobstructed views of the city from the terrace. How cool is that?
16 | Take the ferry to Noord
Leaving from the back of Central Station, the free ferry to Noord offers one of the best views in the city. As you cruise across the water, you can check out the Eye Film Museum, This Is Holland and A’Dam Tower.
I’ve done this exact trip during sunset and it was such a lovely journey. Plus, you can visit all three of these attractions for free if you have an Iamsterdam City Card.
17 | Discover unique art at NDSM Loods
When it comes to free attractions in Amsterdam, NDSM Loods is one of the top spots if you’re into art. Located in the Noord neighbourhood, this old shipyard is one of the city’s best hidden gems.
In fact, the first time I visited Noord, I had planned to visit the Straat Museum. Instead, I spent hours checking out artist studios and free exhibitions at NDSM Loods. Unlike other art galleries in Amsterdam, it has a hipster vibe with tons of random objects lying about. I was obsessed!
If you love art as much as me, this place needs to be on your bucket list. Especially if you’re visiting Amsterdam on a budget.
18 | See colourful street art at NDSM Wharf
Afterwards, head outside to enjoy a large selection of colourful street art. The most famous is Eduardo Kobra’s Anne Frank mural and it’s not hard to see why. It’s an impressively creative tribute to this brave teen.
Aside from that, you’ll find plenty of funky street art in a wide range of styles from cartoon vibes to realistic masterpieces. Go and check it out for yourself!
19 | Join a tour of Gassan Diamonds
Gassan Diamonds is one of the most well-known diamond companies in Amsterdam. If you have an interest in all things sparkly, they’re worth visiting during your trip to the Dutch capital.
Located inside a 19th-century building, there are daily free tours inside the factory. After learning more about diamonds and Gassan’s work process, you can see their large collection of watches and jewellery.
While I can’t promise you won’t be tempted by pretty things, joining the tour is free.
20 | Take advantage of free festivals and events
With many festivals and events taking place throughout the year, it’s no wonder Amsterdam receives millions of tourists.
Depending on the dates of your visit, you may want to check out:
- National Tulip Day: 18th January
- Tulip Season: From late March until mid-May
- Open Tower Day: Often held in March
- King’s Day: 27th April
- Amsterdam Pride: 27th July – 4th August
- Open Monument Day: 14th – 15th September
- Grachtenrace (the canal race): 12th October
- Sinterklaas Parade: 17th November
- Amsterdam Light Festival: 28th November – 19th January
Although this list is not exhaustive, they’re fun events to enjoy during your visit. They’ll give you a true feel of the city and what it has to offer.
As a frequent visitor, I’ve experienced lots of these events. My favourites are Tulip Season and Amsterdam Pride.
Although these are perhaps the most popular events in the city, there’s a reason for it. Amsterdam truly comes alive during these unique festivals and the atmosphere is unbeatable.
21 | Relax in a park
Despite being a busy city, there are many spots to escape the hustle and bustle.
Vondelpark may be the most well-known and its location means it’s a fab place to explore after museum hopping in Museumplein. However, the city is home to lots of nice parks.
Depending on your itinerary, you may want to check out:
Westerpark: Close to Fabrique des Lumières and the Het Schip Museum.
Beatrixpark: Close to The Upside Down.
Oosterpark: Close to Wereldmuseum Amsterdam.
Park Frankendael: Close to Museum Tot Zover which is easily one of the craziest things to do in the Dutch capital.
22 | Explore the local markets
If markets are more your thing, you’re in luck! Amsterdam boasts a fabulous market scene loved by both locals and tourists alike.
The most popular include Albert Cuypmarkt, IJ Hallen Flea Market and the floating flower market (which I mentioned above).
If you’re in the mood for a spot of vintage shopping, people-watching or tasty food, make sure you check at least one out. In fact, I’m planning to hit up all these (and more) on my next trip to the city.
23 | Visit free churches
There are many outstanding churches in Amsterdam and while some are paid attractions, others are free to visit.
Westerkerk is just a stone’s throw away from Anne Franks House so it’s worth visiting if you’re in the area. Noorderkerk is also nearby and easily reachable on foot.
For a more decorative interior with stained glass windows, head to St. Nicolaaskerk across the road from Central Station. This building always catches my attention and I can’t seem to pass by without snapping at least one photo. Its exterior is impressive.
24 | Discover Begijnhof courtyard
If you’re searching for hidden gems, Begijnhof courtyard is a must-see. Tucked away a short walk away from the Damrak (AKA one of the main streets in the city), many visitors will miss this spot during their trip.
However, Begijnhof is an amazing courtyard that is seeped in history. Back in the day, this lovely spot was home to a group of Christian women who made a vow to chastity. These days, the courtyard still houses two religious buildings including the chapel and the reformed church.
You’ll also find the oldest home in Amsterdam. Number 34 dates back to the 15-century making it one of the most historical buildings in town.
25 | Wander around Vrije University Botanical Garden
Hortus Botanicus is well worth a visit, but it’s a paid attraction. If you fancy admiring florals and greenery without spending a dime, head to Vrije University Botanical Garden. It’s a serene place to escape the chaos of city life.
26 | Adventure around Amsterdam Forest
For something a bit different, venture out to Amsterdam Forest. If you like being out in nature, this is the place for you. Twenty minutes away from Museumplein via public transport, it’s worlds apart from the chaos of the city centre.
In no time at all, you’ll find yourself in a serene setting amongst greenery and wildlife. How nice does that sound?
27 | Take in some rays on Amsterdam Beach
I bet the beach isn’t the first thing you think of when you head to Amsterdam. However, you can easily reach the seaside in less than an hour. If the sun is shining, visiting the beach is a great way to spend the day.
There are several beaches nearby such as Zandvoort, IJmuiden and Bloemendaal. Wijk Aan Zee is a little further if you’re travelling by public transport, but it’s a blissful spot if you don’t mind the journey.
Just pack a picnic and a book, and then you’re good to go. It’s the perfect way to relax, especially if you’re itinerary has been full on.
28 | See the Artis Zoo flamingos on Artisplein
If you like animals but don’t fancy paying €26.50 (if booked online) to get into Artis Zoo, you can see the flamingos free of charge.
Nearby restaurant De Plantage has an outdoor terrace and if you enter through the side gate, you can walk to the end to see the iconic pink creatures. It’s also a highly-rated restaurant so it’s worth booking a table if you fancy some delicious food.
29 | Visit Melkweg EXPO Photo Exhibition
Do you love photography as much as I do? Then make sure you visit the Melweg EXPO Photo Exhibition. This well-loved space runs regular exhibitions for up-and-coming talent in the local area.
It’s no doubt one of the best places to visit in Amsterdam for free if you’re looking for creative vibes.
