Tips for visiting Instagram spots in Amsterdam
Wake up at the crack of dawn
I hate waking up early as much as the next person and honestly, it’s something I rarely do (even for photos). However, it’s so much easier to get people-free snaps if you wake up early. By rising at the crack of dawn, you can get out and about while most travellers are still pressing snooze.
This gives you the chance to get your perfect shots before popular destinations (such as Museumplein and The Upside Down) become overrun with tourists.
Be prepared to wait
As such a popular city, Amsterdam is often crowded. If you don’t fancy waking up early, be prepared to wait. With a little bit of patience, you can typically get people-free shots.
Get creative
Sometimes, patience isn’t enough to get clear photos without other travellers getting in the way. At times like this, you need to get creative! Is there another spot nearby that’s less crowded? Can you play around with angles? What about hiding people with props?
At the end of the day, this can make a photo shoot more fun as you search for creative ways to get your perfect snap. Why not give it a go?
Grab a prop or two
Speaking of props, they can be a great way to add something unique to your travel photos. Almost everyone takes photos at the Damrak, how can you make yours different?
A great way to snap photos that stand out while on the road is to grab a prop that relates to the destination. For example, magnets, stroopwafels and tulips (if you’re visiting during spring) are a fab way to spruce up your Amsterdam travel photos.
Travel with your camera gear
While phones can take amazing photos, cameras offer more opportunities to get creative. If you’re a whizz with your camera, play around with the settings. This can drastically change your photos in just a few clicks.
Experimenting with different lenses offers another layer of excitement. Portrait lenses are a must if you like being a subject within your travel snaps, while wide-angled lenses allow you to capture more details.
Travelling to the Dutch capital alone? Then consider carrying a tripod! These can be a fab resource when it comes to taking travel photos solo.
Make sure you’re prepared
No matter how you plan on taking photos for the gram, you’ll need to come prepared. The night before, make sure you charge your devices. You should also travel with extra batteries, memory cards and other equipment that make capturing content a breeze.
Have a plan
If you have a full-on itinerary, it’s important to plan well. For example, you won’t want to go from one part of the city to another before heading back on yourself. To make the most out of your Instagram mission, plan your time wisely.
Map out your must-see photo spots using Google Maps and visit them according to destination. For example, if you start at Amsterdam Central Station, the Damrak is just up the road. This makes it a no-brainer when it comes to where you should visit next.
