Is Amsterdam safe to travel alone?
Absolutely! As one of the most visited cities in Europe, Amsterdam is very safe for solo travellers. This vibrant city is known for its warm hospitality and welcoming atmosphere! With friendly locals who are happy to help, you’ll have no issues travelling solo in Amsterdam.
Furthermore, crime rates in Amsterdam are pretty low when compared to other European destinations. Although petty crimes such as pickpocketing can be rife, this is a pretty common issue across the globe. As long as you do what you can to avoid being a target, you’ll more than likely be fine!
Amsterdam is also renowned for its inclusive values, creating an environment that promotes diversity and respect. In fact, the Netherlands were the first to legalise same-sex marriage and continue to celebrate freedom, diversity and different cultures. As a solo traveller, it should bring comfort knowing that the country values individuals from all walks of life!

Is Amsterdam safe for solo female travellers?
After several solo trips to the Dutch capital, I can say with confidence that solo female travel in Amsterdam is incredibly safe. In fact, I even felt safe at night as I bar-hopped in the city centre.
Although I was walking alone, the city’s infrastructure is designed to prioritize safety. At any given time of day, well-lit streets, bustling pedestrian areas, and reliable public transportation networks ensure that you can get around the city safely!
Is Amsterdam safe at night?
If you’re heading out for a nightcap, you’re in luck! Amsterdam is home to many amazing bars, cosy pubs and dance clubs making it one of the best places to go in Europe for a night out.
But is Amsterdam safe at night? It is indeed! On any given night, the city centre tends to be rammed with locals and tourists out on the town. Furthermore, with well-lit streets and a low crime rate, Amsterdam is generally safe, even for a solo female traveller! On all of my trips to the city, I’ve never felt unsafe at night.

How to stay safe in Amsterdam as a solo traveller
Despite this, it’s always important to take precautions. This is true for any type of traveller, but it’s especially true if you’re a woman travelling alone. By adopting these basic safety precautions, you can explore Amsterdam with peace of mind, even if it’s your first time in the city. Here’s how to stay safe as you travel solo in Amsterdam:
Use common sense
As with any destination worldwide, using common sense is key as a solo traveller. While Amsterdam is generally safe, ensure you’re always aware of your surroundings by staying present and avoiding distractions. For example, don’t stare at your phone or walk into a dodgy back alley. Stay alert and avoid areas known for crime or danger. Especially at night.
Additionally, don’t constantly flash your valuables. Taking photos is fine, but try to put your fancy cameras away once you’re done. Similarly, keep your phone, purse and important documents in a zipped bag or firmly in your hand. It’s better to be safe than sorry!
While you should always keep an eye on your belongings, this is especially true in crowded areas around the top tourist attractions. This is often where pickpockets and petty thieves operate! Trust your gut. Honestly, if something feels off, it probably is!

Don’t drink too much
I love a few cocktails as much as the next person, but I also know my limits. Although I pretty much always visit cocktail bars when I travel, I don’t get drunk unless I’m with others. If you want to check out the nightlife in Amsterdam, by all means, do that. Just make sure you know when to stop!
Avoid the er… Coffee shops
The same can be said for other substances. Although it’s legal in the city, visiting coffee shops to get high is best avoided. Everyone reacts differently and you need to ensure that you’re alert at all times. That’s safety 101 for ya!
Consider skipping the Red Light District
Furthermore, the famous Red Light District often attracts questionable tourists who go there to get drunk and check out the ladies. Although it’s typically harmless, you might experience seedy catcalling if you’re in the area alone after dark.
If you want to learn more about this part of the city, it’s best to join a guided tour. During these tours, you’ll get a complete insight into the history of the Red Light District.
Have a backup plan
Having a backup plan as a solo traveller is equally important. Let’s say you notice someone is following you. Knowing how to get out of this situation is key. Ultimately, the best thing to do here is to either alert the authorities or tell someone else. Although it’s likely that this won’t happen, knowing how you’ll get out of a tricky situation will keep you calmer in the moment.

Keep a trusted friend or family member updated
Although my friends and family are used to me travelling alone, that doesn’t mean they don’t worry! When I’m on a solo trip, I always keep them updated, especially if I’m not going to have a signal for a few days! That way, they don’t worry unnecessarily.Â
Don’t share your exact location on social media
If you’re travelling alone, I recommend NOT sharing your current location on social media. By all means, share away after you’ve left or at the end of the day, but sharing your exact location while on the go is a bad move. It can put you at risk if someone has malicious intent! While it’s unlikely in Amsterdam, that’s still a rule I live by no matter where I am.
Check out the reviews
Before you book accommodation or tours, read the reviews! On some websites, you can filter the results to find honest opinions from other solo travellers. This information is super helpful as it gives you more insight into whether or not you should book! On booking.com, I often use the top picks for solo travellers option and it hasn’t let me down once.

ALWAYS purchase travel insurance
Back in the day, I never purchased travel insurance. Luckily, nothing happened. However, purchasing travel insurance is SO important. Although it doesn’t happen often, things can go wrong when you travel.
Let’s say you’re biking through the streets of Amsterdam and you have a rough fall, you might need to head to the hospital for stitches. With travel insurance, you’ll be covered!
These days, I find it cheaper to buy an annual plan as I travel so often. I also always shop around to find the best deal. Money Supermarket and Compare the Market are some of the best comparison websites to check out!
Where to stay as a solo female traveller in Amsterdam
Hostels
It’s common knowledge that hostels are a great way to meet people, especially if you are travelling alone! In fact, I’ve met many lovely people over the years all across the globe. By staying in dorm rooms, you’re forced to interact with others. This can lead to new friendships (or at least someone to hang out with for a few days).
Even if you stay in a private room, shared common areas can be a great place to spark conversation! Here are two hostels (that I can personally recommend) to consider booking on your solo adventure in Amsterdam:
Clink Noord Amsterdam
Clink Noord is one of the best hostels in Amsterdam for solo travellers. They have a whole host of activities on offer from bar crawls to karaoke. Plus, they also have a bar which serves as a fab place to meet like-minded individuals. Located across the water from Amsterdam Central and a stones-throw away from some popular attractions, it also boasts a convenient location!

Cocomama
Compared to Clink Noord, Cocomama is a lot more relaxed. It’s also much smaller and has a cosy vibe. If you’re looking for a central place to stay, the location of this hostel is also ideal as it’s just a 15-minute walk from Museumplein.
Mid-Range Hotels
Although hostels can be fun, sometimes we might not want to socialise and that’s okay! As a self-confessed introvert, I often need time to myself. If you need some me-time and your budget allows, splash out on a hotel!
Now, Amsterdam isn’t the cheapest. Especially if you’re visiting in peak season, but you can still find some decent deals if you book ahead of time. Consider checking in to:
Amsterdam House of Arts & Crafts
A short walk away from Dam Square, Amsterdam House of Arts & Crafts offers a central stay in the city. With beautiful rooms and yummy breakfast (including lots of fresh fruits), it’s one of the best mid-range hotels in the Dutch capital. Plus, there’s even a sauna in the deluxe room. How fancy!

Hotel Sebastians
Hotel Sebastians is a stunning boutique hotel situated in the centre of the city. In addition to its great location, the hotel boasts stunning rooms, great breakfast and value for money. The hotel is also highly-rated amongst solo travellers. Perfect!
The Hendrick’s Hotel
If you’re looking for a stylish hotel in Amsterdam, book a room at The Hendrick’s Hotel! With each room decorated in a different style, this hotel is an interior lover’s dream! In addition to its breathtaking interiors, the hotel houses a fantastic bar to enjoy at the end of a long day.
Hotel 717
Hotel 717 offers rooms with a classic yet modern twist. Similarly to each spot listed in this post, the hotel has a central location making it easy to get to the city’s top attractions in no time at all!

Luxury Hotels
Heading to Amsterdam to celebrate a special occasion? Fancy treating yourself? Go for it girl! The Dutch capital is home to a large number of breathtaking hotels that put the L in luxury! If you book a stay at one of these gems, you’re in for a treat.
Hotel Estherea
If you’re looking for a beautifully designed hotel, look no further than Hotel Estherea. With its elegant setting, the feminine style of this hotel is just gorgeous!
Furthermore, the hotel also boasts a gym, a small library and a lounge with free hot drinks for guests. This is the perfect place to stay if you’re on the hunt for luxury in central Amsterdam!
Pulitzer Amsterdam
Pulitzer is one of the most unique hotels in Amsterdam. This large well-loved hotel offers rooms to suit all interests. From chic designs to colourful art themes, there is a wealth of choice! Clearly, I’d opt for an art-focused room, but each guest room offers something different. How cool is that?
In addition to snazzy rooms, Pulitzer Amsterdam has a fantastic bar that is also open to the public. After drinking there myself, I got a real feel for just how luxurious this stunning hotel is! Plus, the cocktails were delicious.

Things to do in Amsterdam alone
Check out the city’s world-renowned museums
Visiting a museum is a great solo activity and in my opinion, Amsterdam is one of the best cities in the world for museum hopping. With museums to suit every taste, you’re sure to find at least one museum that piques your interest. Some of the top museums in Amsterdam are:
- Anne Franks House
- Rijksmuseum
- Van Gogh Museum
- Houseboat Museum
- Eye Film Museum
- NEMO Science Museum
- Moco Museum
- Amsterdam Museum
- Stedelijk Museum
- Bodyworlds Museum
Top tip: If you’re planning to visit lots of museums, it might be worth buying the Iamsterdam City Card!
Go on a group tour
If you want to meet new people, joining a group tour for a few hours (or a few days) is a fantastic way to do so! In fact, this is something I highly recommend as you already have something in common to be on the same tour. Depending on your interests, there is a wide range of tours in Amsterdam worth considering. For example:
Guided bike tour of Amsterdam city centre
Have an authentic Dutch experience as you ride through the streets of Amsterdam on a guided bike tour. Your local guide will take you to all of the must-see spots in the city including Vondelpark, De Pijp, Museumplein and Jordaan.
During your tour, you’ll learn more about the city’s history and visit hidden gems that locals love! Plus, your guide can share insider knowledge that will help you have an even better solo trip to Amsterdam!

Walking tour around the Jewish Quarter
Join a guided walking tour with Trigger Tours to delve deeper into Amsterdams Jewish Quarter. You’ll discover key landmarks and more information about Jewish culture in the city. Furthermore, your guide will tell you all about the Nazi occupation in Amsterdam and how it impacted the lives of many Jews in the city.
Authentic food tasting tour in Jordaan
Trying local dishes is one of the best ways to immerse yourself in a new destination. In Amsterdam, there are many traditional Dutch foods to try such as Stamppot, pancakes and apple pie.
To try some of the best local foods, joining a group tour is recommended! Although you can certainly do it yourself, local guides will have insider knowledge of the best places to go.
On this particular food tour in Jordaan, your guide will take you around this popular neighbourhood stopping at several locations to try some specialities. You’ll visit family-run establishments as you enjoy tasty samples at each spot.

Join a bar crawl
Joining a bar crawl is the safest way to experience nightlife in Amsterdam as a solo female traveller. If you’re staying in a hostel, it’s likely they organise these internally. However, if you’re not, don’t fret! You can find a number of bar crawl tours and nightlife experiences on Get Your Guide. Here are some of the best-rated options:
- Bar crawl around the Red Light District
- Cocktail workshop in Central Amsterdam
- Ultimate party pub crawl in Amsterdam
- Cocktail workshop with nightclub
Wander around Hortus Botanicus
Find solace amongst the greenery of Hortus Botanicus, one of the oldest botanical gardens worldwide. As you stroll around, this hidden gem offers a peaceful retreat filled with exotic plants, calming ponds and palms galore! It’s without a doubt one of the best things to do in Amsterdam alone.
Go on a relaxed stroll
Lose yourself in the allure of Amsterdam as you wander along its iconic canals. Take a leisurely stroll along the enchanting waterways, soaking up the unique Dutch charm and impressive architecture.
As a solo traveller with nobody to distract you with chitter-chatter, this is the perfect opportunity to embrace the city’s unique ambience. You might even discover some hidden gems!

Visit some hidden gems
Speaking of hidden gems, there are many great places in Amsterdam that fly under the radar! If you want a break from mass crowds, checking out some of these secret spots is a fabulous thing to do in Amsterdam. Don’t miss…
Rijksmuseum’s secret library
Many travellers visit the Rijkmuseum during their time in the city, but the museum’s secret library is worlds away from the crowded corridors of this popular Amsterdam attraction. Tucked away behind an unassuming door, you’ll find a treasure chest of historical books that allow you to delve deeper into the country’s history.
With just a handful of people admiring the library’s beauty during my time there, something tells me the museum wants to keep it a secret. In my opinion, that just makes it more exciting! If you’re heading to Amsterdam soon, make sure you go looking for this picture-perfect hidden library.
NDSM Wharf
Located in Amsterdam North away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre, NDSM Wharf is one of the coolest places in Amsterdam. With a funky artist warehouse, street art museum and lots of great places to eat, it’s a place worth checking out during your Amsterdam solo trip!

Beurspassage
Despite its location in the heart of Amsterdam, many travellers don’t know about this place until they stumble upon it by chance. Well, at least that’s what happened to me…
Beurspassage is a unique passageway between two of the city’s main streets. Adorned with astonishing decorations, vibrant mosaics and Dutch-inspired art, a stroll down Beurspassage is one of the most unique things to do in Amsterdam!
Explore further afield
Not only is Amsterdam safe for solo female travellers, but so is the rest of the Netherlands! With so many beautiful places worth checking out, consider booking a day trip from Amsterdam. Escaping the capital for the day can give you the opportunity to delve deeper into Dutch culture, beat the crowds and get a real feel for local life.

Solo dining in Amsterdam
If you’re new to dining solo, it can be a little intimidating at first. However, it’s something you soon get used to as you travel alone more and more. Luckily, Amsterdam has some great restaurants that welcome solo diners with open arms. Check out the following:
De Foodhallen
With a bustling atmosphere and cool vibes, food halls and markets are great places for solo travellers to grab a bite to eat. De Foodhallen is no different! Located in Amsterdam West, this well-loved dining spot offers a variety of cuisines.
Black and Blue
Situated just a short walk from Anne Frank House, Black and Blue is the perfect spot to eat after a day of sightseeing. Its a prime location, amazing cocktails and lovely decor make it a must-try! After eating there myself, I can’t recommend it enough for solo travellers.
Despite specialising in steak and meat dishes, the restaurant serves a variety of foods including vegan and veggie options. They also boast a fab cocktail list including my absolute favourite drink (Aperol Spritz). Winner!

The benefits of solo travel
As I’ve said already, I’m a big advocate for travelling alone. After exploring the globe solo for over eleven years, I’ve seen the benefits first-hand! Here are three reasons to travel solo:
For the ultimate freedom
In my opinion, the best thing about travelling alone is the freedom that comes with it. Embarking on a solo adventure gives you the power to decide where you go, what you see, where you eat and much more. You’ll get to decide your own itinerary and make any sudden changes should you wish to do so. Seen a sign for happy hour? Take advantage! Change of plans? No problem!
You can explore at your own pace, choosing to sleep in or get up at the crack of dawn for breathtaking sunsets. You can cram in as many attractions as you wish or wander the streets at a snail’s pace taking it all in. The point is, you get to decide. You don’t need to discuss it with anyone and you don’t need to compromise! How good is that?
To learn more life skills
Travelling alone is incredibly liberating, but as amazing as it is, things can (and will) go wrong. However, if you ask me, that’s not a bad thing. Travel is not all sunshine and rainbows and things are bound to go wrong sometimes.
When they do, you’ll see just how capable you are! By finding solutions to your problems, you’ll learn new life skills and grow as a person.
To meet like-minded people
Visiting a new destination alone is also a great way to meet people. Through staying in hostels, joining group tours or sparking up conversations, you have an opportunity to meet new people. Often these people have similar interests and can become friends, especially if they’re also travelling alone.
