Deciding where to stay on an upcoming trip can be hard. Ideally, you want somewhere that boasts comfort, great customer service and a good location without breaking the bank. Some hotels offer this, while others go above and beyond.
If you’re wondering where to stay in Hamburg, you may have come across the Pierdrei Hotel. It’s bagged high review scores on all the main booking sites, but is it really a good place to stay?
On a recent trip to Hamburg, I spent two nights at this highly-rated hotel to see what all the fuss was about. I sampled the breakfast, visited the on-site bars and experienced everything this hotel has to offer to share this honest review.

How to get to the hotel from Hamburg Airport
Like most European cities, getting around in Hamburg is quite straightforward. Especially if you use Google Maps. However, here’s the easiest way to get to the hotel via public transport:
- Hop on the S1 train towards Wedel and get off at Ohlsdorf
- Change to the U1 line towards Ohlstedt and get off at Meßberg Station
- Walk for 10 minutes
A quick note: Although there are several routes to take, this is the one I went for and it was pretty easy to find my way around. Also, if you have a travel pass or valid ticket for public transport, there is no need to validate it like you do in other European destinations.
First Impressions of Pierdrei Hotel Hafencity in Hamburg
Walking into the hotel, I was impressed by the beautiful interiors and warm welcome. With teal walls, wooden shelves and a colourful gallery wall peeking around the corner, it’s a lovely spot to rest your legs after a long journey from your home country.
Upon checking in, I was greeted with a smile and important information for getting to my room. As a solo traveller who often stays in hostels, it was a nice treat to check in to one of the top hotels in Hamburg!
Location, location, location
There are many great things about this hotel and one of them is 100% the location. As a frequent traveller, I always try to stay within walking distance of as many attractions as possible.
Luckily, Pierdrei Hotel is super close to many of the best things to do in Hamburg. It’s around a 10-minute walk away from Miniatur Wunderland, Hamburg Dungeon and the Elbphilharmonie concert hall.
Don’t mind a longer walk? Then you can also get to St. Pauli Piers (which is a must on your Hamburg itinerary) in 30 minutes.
If you’d prefer to use public transport, there are excellent public transport links nearby with a few bus stops just outside the hotel. This makes it extremely easy to get from A to B.
While there are plenty of hotels in Hamburg city centre, this unique establishment has a lot to offer.
Types of rooms
Pierdrei Hotel Hafencity has a selection of rooms to choose from depending on your budget. They range from small rooms to extra large rooms. As you may expect, you’ll pay more if you book a larger space, but you’ll likely only want to book the extra large room if you’re travelling as a group.
Each room typically comes with:
- Comfortable double beds
- Glorious rainfall showers as well as a smaller showerhead
- Hairdryers and toiletries
- TV’s that you can stream from
- Fridges to store snacks and drinks
- Safes to secure your belongings
- Phones to contact reception (and other parts of the hotel) if needed
- A partial air-con system that’s more environmentally friendly
- Hanging racks with magazines
- Fast WiFi
Bigger rooms also come with:
- Sofas to relax on after a long day of sightseeing
- Desks (which is ideal for remote workers on a workation)
- A games table and dining table (extra large rooms only)
- Tea and coffee stations
Personally, I stayed in a Medium Plus room on my solo adventure to Hamburg and there was plenty of space for one person. In fact, the room was much larger than I’m used to on my travels.
In addition to the space, the room was incredibly comfortable and I slept very well.
Camper City
For something a little different, the hotel also boasts a section to camp in caravans. If you’re looking for unique accommodation in Hamburg, look no further!
There is a shared bathroom area with showers, toiletries and towels for happy campers and each caravan offers:
- Its own themed decor: Flower Coco, Hippie Coco or Retro Coco
- A double bed, TV, fridge and safe
- Complimentary highspeed WiFi
- Outdoor seating to enjoy the sunshine (if you’re lucky)
I thought this was such a cool concept that I’ll be sure to book one of these next time I visit Hamburg.
Unfortunately, all three caravans were booked during my trip so I was unable to have a sneak peek inside. However, here’s what the space looked like from the outside… How fabulous is this?
Cleanliness
Sometimes, hotel rooms can be a little dusty and unclean despite how pretty they look in photos. Unlike some hotels I’ve stayed at in the past, Pierdrei Hotel Hafencity was spotlessly clean.
They clearly put a lot of effort into ensuring each room is up to scratch so if a high level of cleanliness is important to you, this is one of the best hotels in Hamburg.
Customer service
The friendly staff made my stay incredibly pleasant. They answered every one of my questions in a helpful manner and nothing was too much trouble.
The only downside that I experienced during my stay was that there wasn’t a kettle in my room on arrival. However, when I wanted some mint tea on my last night, they brought me a kettle and some teabags within minutes so I really can’t complain!
Value for money
Depending on the booking website, type of room and dates of your visit, rooms start from €125 per night. If you’re travelling with a pal or significant other, that’s just €62.50 each, but honestly, €125 for a solo traveller in a nice hotel is a pretty good deal.
Fancy staying at Camper City? Then you’ll be pleased to know that campers start from €68 so not only are you getting a cool overnight experience, it’s cheaper too!
Now, of course, prices will rise during the high season or due to events, but they’re quite reasonable at any time of year. Especially for the high level of customer service, cleanliness, room quality and everything else they offer.

Breakfast
The Kitchens Restaurant is the on-site restaurant at Pierdrei Hotel Hafencity. It’s also where you’ll enjoy breakfast if it’s included in your booking. Speaking of breakfast, there is a wide variety of food available such as:
- Cooked breakfast: Sausages, eggs, bacon, beans etc
- Cereal, fruit and yoghurt
- Bread, spreads and salad
- Doughnuts and sweet treats
- Croissants and baked goods
- A tea and coffee station
- Fresh juices
- And more!
This might sound like an exaggeration, but it was truly one of the best hotel breakfasts I’ve had in my life. With such a wide mix of food, I was able to fuel up for a day of sightseeing depending on what I fancied each morning.
Breakfast runs between 6.30am and 11am each morning which means it caters to both early risers and night owls. However, it’s not included in the cost of the room.
You can expect to pay between €17 and €25 depending on the time and day of the week. And yes, that’s the daily cost per person which may seem a little steep, but it’s worth it for such a hearty breakfast.
If you don’t want to spend so much money on your first meal of the day, head to one of Hamburg’s other breakfast spots instead.
Kitchens Restaurant
By night, the space transforms into a cosy restaurant setting with an incredible atmosphere and an intriguing concept. All under one roof, you’ll find dishes inspired by the top chefs and kitchens worldwide. This means you’ll find a range of cuisines on the ever-changing menu.
As it’s a popular spot, pre-booking is advised to avoid disappointment.
Three Fingers bar
Next door to the restaurant, Three Fingers is the ideal place for a nightcap at the end of your busy day. With a large selection of drinks including cocktails, beers, spirits and wines, you’re sure to find something that takes your fancy.
Moon 46 rooftop bar
Alternatively, consider ending your night on the roof at Moon 46. If Hamburg has treated you to sunny weather during your stay, you can enjoy the last of the sun before heading down to bed.
Facilities
Aside from everything I’ve already mentioned, the hotel also has a lot of handy perks. For example, hotel guests get access to:
- Lounge spots: Surrounded by plants and lovely decor
- Spati: An on-site shop where you can buy drinks and snacks 24/7
- Harbour Stage: An events space for comedy shows, concerts and more
- Racker room: An adult-free zone for kids to have fun
- Bike rental to get around the city
- Lockers and luggage storage

The best way to book a stay at Pierdrei Hotel Hafencity in Hamburg is to book via their website. Their online booking system allows you to select your chosen dates and discover which rooms are still available.
If you’re booking more than one room, you can even let them know if you’d like to stay next to each other or on the same floor.
From there, you can choose which room you want to stay in, pre-book any extras, insert your personal details and pay for your stay.
Conclusion
Ultimately, I can see why this hotel is so popular amongst reviewers online. After staying there myself, I was impressed by the facilities, cleanliness, comfort and interiors.
Furthermore, its location allows you to reach many of Hamburg’s top sights in no time at all. If you do need to go further afield, there are bus stops and a train station nearby that makes getting around a breeze.
The only thing that could have been better during my stay was having tea-making facilities in my room upon arrival (how very English of me). However, the reception staff were super quick to sort that out when I enquired.
If you’re on the hunt for somewhere to stay in Hamburg, I highly recommend checking this place out. Trust me, you won’t be disappointed!
