Seaside Towns in Yorkshire to Visit This Summer!

With talk of staycations being allowed from April, Brits across the country are planning their well-deserved getaways! Despite the fact we may be able to travel overseas by the time Summer arrives, I believe we shouldn’t forget about our own backyard. Across the country, there are so many amazing places to explore. For example, there are seaside towns in Yorkshire that offer everything you need for a UK adventure!

In this post, I will share some of the most fabulous coastal spots to explore in Yorkshire. I hope this fuels your wanderlust and offers all the inspiration you need to travel to the United Kingdom this year!

How to get around during your trip to the Yorkshire Coast:

By car: In the UK, travelling by car is often the easiest way to get around. At least, it is most of the time. This is due to the fact that journey lengths can be reduced. Also, it gives you the chance to stop off at lesser-known locations or hard-to-reach spots.

If you are able to drive, this will allow you to adventure around the best Yorkshire coastal towns at your own pace. Thus giving you the opportunity to spend as long as you want in each location without relying on public transport! Result!

By bus: If you are unable to drive, don’t fret! Coastal towns in Yorkshire are well connected. This makes it very easy to get around. For example, it is possible to travel to each place I am about to list by bus. This is (obviously) ideal if you can’t drive or want a well-deserved break!

Coastal towns in Yorkshire that you NEED to visit this Summer:

Whitby

Starting with a firm favourite… Without a doubt one of the best seaside resorts in England, Whitby is a must-see. In fact, the town has been dubbed the UK’s most popular holiday spot! It isn’t hard to see why with its picture-perfect views, calming beach and English beauty. Make sure you add it to the top of your UK bucket list right away!

Things to do in Whitby

There are a number of super cool things to do in Whitby. For example, climbing the 199 steps to check out the impressive Whitby Abbey should definitely be on your list. Aside from that, don’t miss a stroll down the beach, hitting up the arcades and trying the town’s most famous fish and chips spot – The Magpie!

Lastly, spend some time wandering around the shops, admiring the views from the Whalebone Arch and watching the sunset from the pier.

Where to stay in Whitby?

The Leeway

After staying at The Leeway during my trip to Whitby, I can highly recommend this lovely B&B. The owners Karen and Gary offer such a warm welcome and nothing is too much trouble. In addition to that, the location is ideal just a short walk away from the main attractions and shops.

The rooms are comfortable and offer everything you could ever need throughout your stay. This includes tea and coffee facilities, a cosy bed and a TV to watch whilst you relax after a long day! Furthermore, each room comes with a private and well-equipped bathroom.

Lastly, breakfast at The Leeway is delicious! They cater to all dietary requirements and serve up a selection of cereals and juices as well as a full English breakfast. Simply put, you should seriously consider booking a stay here!

Jet Black Jewel

If you’d prefer to stay somewhere with a stylish vibe, consider booking a room at Jet Black Jewel. Situated just a short walk from The Leeway, this hotel also boasts an excellent location. Additionally, it’s one of the most unique hotels in Whitby thanks to its interesting decor and uncommon check-in experience. As the hotel doesn’t have a check-in desk, guests receive a code before their stay. This allows them access to the building at any time after 3pm on the date of arrival.

Jet Black Jewel offers nice rooms that are each decorated differently. As such, travellers can pick their rooms based on their personal tastes. Furthermore, some rooms even have excellent views of Whitby Abbey. Perfect!

How long to spend in Whitby?

There is so much to do in Whitby, you should plan to spend two or three days there. That way, you should have enough time to hit up all the tourist hot spots. Or, at the very least, the ones that truly interest you.

Scarborough

Scarborough is another much-loved destination amongst British holiday-makers. It’s also the biggest of all Yorkshire seaside resorts which means there is a lot to do in town! Due to this, you should allow around two days in town to truly appreciate Scarborough and the surrounding areas.

Things to do in Scarborough

Once you’re done hitting up its blue flag beach, spend some time visiting Scarborough’s main attractions. For example, checking out The Scarborough Fair Collection is one of the most interesting things to do in the area. This unusual museum showcases a large collection of exhibits dating back to the 1800s including fairground rides, vintage cars and steam engines.

Alternatively, if that doesn’t take your fancy, you could visit the Rotunda Museum or Scarborough Castle. Both places are well worth a trip!

Lastly, travellers to the area may also want to make a visit to nearby North York Moors National Park. The national park is located around 30-60 minutes outside of Scarborough and is truly beautiful. If you are road-tripping through seaside towns in Yorkshire, it’s a worthy detour!

Where to stay in Scarborough

The Windmill

For a bit of a different overnight experience, book a stay at The Windmill. The historical and listed building is situated close to the beach and town centre. This makes it an ideal place to stay! The property offers rooms in addition to studios and cottages. As such, there are choices for all types of travellers. Guests love everything about this spot including comfort, facilities, location and value for money.

The Wrea Head Hall Country House Hotel

Despite being almost 3 miles outside of the centre, The Wrea Head Hall Country House Hotel is one of the best places to stay in Scarborough. This beautiful four-star hotel sits on stunning grounds that boast excellent views of the nearby countryside. Plus, it only takes 10 minutes by car to get into the centre. This means that if you are driving, it won’t take long to arrive at your chosen attraction (or the beach). Winner!

How long to spend in Scarborough?

As I’ve already stated, there is a lot to keep you busy in Scarborough. As such, you could easily spend 48 hours or longer in this well-loved Yorkshire holiday spot.

Robin Hoods Bay

Just 25 minutes away from Whitby by bus, Robin Hoods Bay is very easily reached. Not only that, but the picturesque fishing village is also incredibly beautiful. If you are in the area, you won’t want to miss spending a few hours here!

Things to do in Robin Hoods Bay

During your time in the village, schedule a visit to the Old Coastguard Station. Especially if you want to learn more about the history of the village. Or, if you’d prefer, you can spend your time in Robin Hood’s Bay getting lost in its picture-perfect winding alleyways amongst the unique homes. Next, hit up some of the indie stores to browse for gifts and goodies. It’s the perfect way to kill some time in this stunning village!

Once your done exploring, head down to the beach to relax and grab some ice cream. Ideally, you will time your beach trip perfectly with the sunset. This will leave you in awe as you marvel at the fabulous views in front of you!

Where to stay in Robin Hoods Bay

Aldersyde Bed & Breakfast

Rated exceptional by past guests, Aldersyde Bed & Breakfast is a great option when trying to decide where to stay in Robin Hoods Bay. The whole B&B is tastefully decorated with some rooms even offering amazing sea views. One guest even stated that this fab B&B exceeded their expectations in more ways than one. Apple Farm Holiday Cottages

If you’d prefer to live like a local during your adventure to the Yorkshire coast, you may want to stay at Apple Farm Holiday Cottages. Filey

Home to one of the loveliest beaches in England, Filey is well worth checking out on your trip through the Yorkshire Coast. It’s an ideal place to visit if you enjoy being surrounded by nature. In addition to its lovely sandy beach, the town boasts beautiful award-winning gardens and parks that are perfect for a stroll!

If you get bored of lounging on the beach, make the trip to Filey Bird Garden and Animal Park. There you can feed animals, admire colourful birds or discover more about the wildlife surrounding you. The choice is yours!

Afterwards, pay a visit to Filey Museum. Ran by volunteers, this museum showcases a range of exhibits that give an interesting insight into the history of the town. Lastly, take a stroll along the seafront to check out Filey’s sculpture trail. This is a great way to pass some time. Especially if you are visiting on a hot day.

Artists Retreat

Located near the beach, Artists Retreat is a super charming place to rest your head. The stunning holiday home is decorated with a lovely nautical theme throughout which is perfect for its location!

Furthermore, the home has everything you could ever need for a cosy stay. For example, you have access to two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a living area and a kitchen with everything you need to cook up a storm.

In addition to that, the accommodation is housed in a holiday park with offers guests the chance to hit up the indoor pool, visit the gym or eat at its restaurant. As such, you have everything you may need for a comfortable stay!

How long to spend in Filey?

24 hours in Filey is more than enough. That amount of time gives you the opportunity to explore at a relaxed pace, whilst still seeing everything that the town has to offer.

Bridlington

Sitting within the East Riding of Yorkshire, Bridlington is a great place to base yourself if you want to explore the surrounding areas. After seeing what the town has to offer, you’re just a short drive away from the picturesque village of Flamborough. Perfect!

Things to do in Bridlington

There are a number of things to do in the coastal town of Bridlington. Some of the top activities include strolling along the harbour, sunbathing on South Beach and visiting Bridlington Bird and Animal Park. The animal park houses a number of birds and animals across 21 acres of land such as parrots, owls, shetland ponies and llamas making it a must-see attraction for animal enthusiasts out there!

Bridlington Bay Apartments

Boasting calming views overlooking the ocean, Bridlington Bay Apartments offer a relaxing feel when it comes to accommodation. In addition to great views, the apartments have all the facilities you may require during your visit which makes them super convenient!

Depending on personal interests, one day should be enough to spend in Bridlington.

Flamborough

Located on the East Yorkshire coast, Flamborough is another beautiful place to visit in Yorkshire. Here, travellers are surrounded by nature, unreal views and stunning beaches. As such, you probably won’t quite believe that you are in England…

The village of Flamborough is a photographer’s dream as it’s home to some lovely views. Whilst in the area, make sure you check out Flamborough Head, North Landing beach and the village’s active lighthouse. Furthermore, pay a quick visit to the 14th-century ruins of Flamborough Castle. Trust me, you won’t be able to stop snapping photos!

Where to stay in Flamborough

Unfortunately, there aren’t many options when it comes to places to stay in Flamborough. The hotels that are available are pretty dated. However, there is more choice when it comes to Bridlington. There, you can find more hotels, apartments and cottages on offer. As Bridlington is so close to Flamborough, that shouldn’t be an issue as you adventure down the East Coast.

How long to spend in Flamborough?

As already mentioned, Flamborough doesn’t have a lot of choice in terms of accommodation. As such, it’s best to visit on a day trip from nearby towns such as Bridlington. How many hours you need in town depends on how long you want to spend at each tourist hotspot.

Personally, I’d spend at least half a day in Flamborough. That should give you enough time to admire a lot of stunning scenery. However, if you want to sunbathe on the beach for more than an hour or so, plan for a full day in the area.

Staithes

For one of the coolest views in Yorkshire, head to Staithes. Despite being such a fab place to explore, the area doesn’t see as many tourists as nearby Scarborough and Whitby. As such, Staithes is a bit of a hidden gem in Yorkshire. Pay the town a visit before that changes…

Things to do in Staithes

For many years, this unique fishing village has been attracting creative travellers. Its unique picture-perfect view is a dream to paint. As such, if that’s something that interests you, make sure you pack your art supplies!

After getting creative and snapping a million shots of the scenery, head back down to the old town. There you can take a walk along the harbour, visit the RLNI centre and explore the towns heritage centre. This museum shares the intriguing history of Captain Cook – an English adventurer and navy captain who is famous across the globe. What’s even better is that the museum is free to visit! Don’t miss out.

Where to stay in Staithes

Endeavour

One of the best choices for solo travellers is Endeavour. This bed and breakfast is situated on the high street which means it’s within walking distance of the town’s attractions. Past travellers have rated Endeavour super high for cleanliness, comfort, value for money and much more.

Furthermore, the property serves up an incredible breakfast with locally sourced ingredients. Lastly, guests state that the host is excellent and happy to share knowledge on the local area. Simply put, you can’t ask for much more when travelling to Staithes!

Ravenscraig House

Situated in the centre of town, Ravenscraig House boasts an excellent location. With four bedrooms and two bathrooms, it’s a great option for groups. As such, it’s ideal for a large family or group of friends travelling together.

The holiday home offers a cosy lounge area, a large dining space and a full kitchen. If you enjoy a relaxing bath after a long hike, you are also in luck! Lastly, there is also an outdoor terrace offering fabulous views of the harbour.

This place is highly rated, so make sure you book in advance if you are desperate to stay here!

Cowbar View Cottage

Cowbar View Cottage is truly stunning and offers a fab option for the style-conscious traveller. Each space in the four-bedroom home is decorated to a high standard with bold colours and charming little trinkets. The cottage also comes with two bathrooms, a beautiful kitchen and excellent views of the picture-perfect dock.

Guests to the cottage love its scenic location, character and charm. However, the cottage is unfortunately not very accessible. If you book a stay here, you will need to walk down a steep hill. Despite this, if you enjoy the unique home decor and a large amount of space, you may be able to see past that!

How long to spend in Staithes?

Staithes is one of the best seaside towns in the UK. Although there isn’t a ton of things to do, it’s extremely picturesque. As such, I could personally spend a whole day admiring the views and creating art.

If you’re not into getting crafty, you may only need half a day in Staithes. However, if you are inspired by your surroundings and enjoy painting or drawing, plan for a day or more.

Runswick Bay

Situated just 30 minutes away from Whitby via public transport, Runswick Bay is easily reached. As such, it’s a great spot to visit on a day trip if you want to check more coastal towns off your Yorkshire bucket list!

Things to do in Runswick Bay

The number one thing to do in Runswick Bay is to hit up the beach. In fact, back in 2020, it was dubbed Britain’s beach of the year. Due to this, it’s easily one of the best seaside towns in Yorkshire. During your beach visit, you can release your inner child and build some sandcastles, do some rock pooling and top up your tan. Okay, the last one may be questionable depending on when you visit…

Where to stay in Runswick Bay

Highfields Hideaway

Ideal for solo travellers, Highfields Hideaway is a super cute holiday home situated in Runswick Bay. Despite its small tiny home vibes, this charming little hideaway has a bedroom/ living space, a kitchen area with a microwave and (very important) tea-making facilities and a full bathroom.

Past travellers love the quirkiness of this accommodation. They also rate it highly for location, cleanliness, facilities and value for money. Lastly, the host of Highfields Hideaway is said to be incredibly helpful and friendly. How lovely!

How long to spend in Runswick Bay?

There isn’t a whole lot of things to do in Runswick Bay except for chillin’ out on the beach. In which case, half a day on an excursion from Whitby should suffice.

The perfect itinerary for visiting seaside towns in Yorkshire

Staithes – Runswick Bay – Whitby – Robin Hood’s Bay – Scarborough – Filey – Flamborough – Bridlington. Furthermore, make sure you allow enough time to truly appreciate each place. I recommend around 10 days (give or take) to explore the area. There is a lot to see after all!

These include Whitby Abbey, Flamborough Head and Cleveland Way. Due to this, it’s a fab place to go on a road trip!

What is the best time to visit seaside towns in Yorkshire?

The most ideal time to explore the best Yorkshire seaside towns depends on what you are looking for. If you want great weather, the most reliable time to visit would be June, July and August. These are Summer months in the UK and offer less chance of rain.

However, with fab weather comes crowds! If you’d prefer to visit attractions without heaps of other tourists, consider travelling in shoulder season. Months like April, May and September still boast decent weather. Additionally, this is when the crowds tend to die down. As such, these months are a great time to travel in the area!

What is the weather like on the Yorkshire Coastline during Summer?

As already mentioned, the weather on the Yorkshire Coast is the best from April to September. Temperatures peak between June and August. However, despite that, coastal towns can sometimes get quite windy. Due to this, I recommend always heading out with a jumper in your bag! Lastly, you should also pack an umbrella. This is England after all…
