The Tower Hotel Lincoln: An honest review

Considering how much I travel (outside of, you know, global pandemics), I haven’t written many hotel or hostel reviews. In the interest of honesty when it comes to recommendations, I’m going to change that. This post will share an honest review of The Tower Hotel in Lincoln.

After booking a room pretty last minute, there wasn’t much choice within my chosen price range. I choose The Tower as it looked like one of the nicest. Here is my feedback on a number of key points including location, value for money and comfort.

An honest review of The Tower Hotel, Lincoln:

First Impressions

Upon arriving, I was impressed. As soon as I walked through the door, I was greeted by a friendly gentleman. Later, I found out his name is Adam. As I checked in, Adam upgraded me to a double room completely free of charge. This was (obviously) very nice as I had originally booked the single room to save a bit of cash.

Adam proceeded to share key information such as breakfast times and wifi information before handing me my keys and showing me the way to my room.

The Room

Upon entering my room, my thoughts were a little mixed. Some decor seemed dated, whilst other areas looked like they had been recently renovated for a more modern feel. For example, the bed and art pieces above looked pretty cool, but the rest of the room was old-fashioned. For someone with a keen interest in interiors, I felt they could have made more effort when it came to pairing pieces together.

As for the bathroom, it was okay. However, it looked like it needed a bit of TLC.

It’s worth noting that some rooms within the hotel have been recently refurbished to a high standard. Soon, the remaining room (including the one I stayed in) may follow suit. Who knows?

Cleanliness

I pride myself on honesty and helpfulness on Pack & Paint and whilst the cleanliness wasn’t the worst, there were definitely some areas of the room that could have benefited from further attention. The kettle seemed dirty and the mirror also needed a wipe down as it was covered in dust.

The bathroom on the other hand could have been much better. There were stains on the ceiling and the grouting looked like it had seen better days.

All in all, compared to other places I’ve stayed at in the past, it was bearable. However, it was less than ideal.

Facilities

The room came with a variety of facilities. This included a TV, which unfortunately only offered a few channels as the rest didn’t work or had no signal. This was a little disappointing as, like many people, I like to relax with a bit of TV before bed whilst I am away.

There was also a hairdryer and a tea-making station offering up sachets of tea, coffee and hot chocolates.

In terms of plug sockets, there were none near the bed in my room. Obviously, this is always a little bit irritating as it means your phone has to be left on the other side of the room whilst you sleep or charge it up. However, it’s worth noting that this could be different in the other rooms as they are laid out differently. You may get lucky!

Comfort

In terms of comfort, the room felt quite cosy and nice to relax in after a busy day of sightseeing. I slept well in bed and found the pillows to be nice and bouncy. Furthermore, there was a blanket on the bed as well as a duvet. This is ideal if you feel the cold easier as temperatures in Lincoln during winter can be rather low.

Breakfast at Number 38 Restaurant

The breakfast came included in the price of the room and if I’m being completely honest, it was disappointing. After eating at the restaurant the day before, I had high hopes. However, I got the impression that as it was free for all guests, the quality of the food perhaps isn’t a priority.

You are offered a menu and told you can have whatever you would like with no limit. I went for the yoghurt and compote, crumpets and a bowl of cereal. None of it really hit the spot. Even the cereal didn’t taste quite right.

If you are staying at The Tower Hotel, I think it’d be best to head into the city and grab breakfast there. The city offers some fab breakfast spots such as Churchill’s Restaurant and Stokes Lawn Café.

Brasserie and Bar

If you’re looking to eat lunch or dinner at The Tower restaurant, you will be treated to a whole different experience. After eating lunch there on the day of arrival, I was truly impressed. The chefs cook up a variety of delicious dishes to a high standard including the likes of fish and chips, hotpots and much more. There is also a selection of cocktails on offer which I can highly recommend!

Furthermore, the restaurant is decorated to a high standard with stunning wallpaper and stylish chairs making it a lovely place to enjoy your meal.

As well as the restaurant, there is also a separate bar to unwind in if you fancy a drink at the end of the day.

Location, location, location

If you are on a road trip through the United Kingdom, the city is well worth visiting. Plus, if you decide to stay at The Tower Hotel, you will have attractions such as Lincoln Cathedral and the castle literally on your doorstep. In fact, you can’t ask for anything much better as both of these top attractions are located around a 5-minute walk from the hotel.

Also nearby, you will find a selection of independent stores that are great for shopping, the historic marble arch and several bars and restaurants. The Tower Hotel is also within walking distance of Steep Hill, the harbour and entertainment venues such as theatres.

Lincoln Central train station, as well as the bus station, are located less than a twenty-minute walk away.

Value for money

Unfortunately, I did feel as though the value for money could have been better. Although the location is perfect, there is definitely room for improvement when it comes to cleanliness, facilities and the free breakfast. I paid approximately £57 (GBP) for a one-night stay in February which felt quite steep considering the time of year. Especially since this was the price for a single room.

Final Comments

Although there are some negative points in this review, no hotel is perfect. I feel like The Tower Hotel is heading in the right direction. If they continue to refurbish outdated rooms to a high standard, this place could become one of Lincoln’s most beautiful hotels.
