5 reasons why you should give handmade gifts

We’ve all been there. It’s weeks or maybe even days away from Christmas or a loved one’s birthday and you have absolutely no idea what to do for a gift. They seem to have everything they could possibly want or need and are offering no clue to what they would like. Sometimes, they insist that they do not want a gift at all, which can get frustrating if you feel this person is partially deserving of something special.

This is when something handmade can become a great alternative to a store-bought gift that may just end up sitting on a shelve.

Here are 5 reasons why you should give handmade gifts:

#1 They are unique and personal

As it was made by you and not purchased from a store, the gift will reflect your artistic style and the interests of your loved one which truly makes it one of a kind and very personal to the person receiving it.

I recently gifted my three youngest sisters memory books for Christmas. Due to distance and quite a hectic schedule, I don’t get to see them as often as I would like. The idea behind the books is that they can look back on memories that we have shared together and remember that although we are often apart, they are a super important part of my life.

The books are not only filled with memories and photographs, but also motivational and inspiring quotes which I hope will fill their minds and thoughts with positive vibes and encourage them to follow their dreams.

Gifts like these can have a lasting impression and become something that your loved one holds onto and cherishes throughout their life. In my opinion, this is one of the best reason to gift handmade.

#2 They are thoughtful and loving gifts

Crafting the gift yourself means that you can decide on exactly how you want it to look with your loved ones interests at the forefront of your mind. This shows the receiver that you have put a lot of thought into exactly what they like.

Sitting down and spending the time to create the gift yourself also sends out a message to the receiver that they are important to you. It shows them that you believe they are worth the many hours that you spent making the gift for them and this can make receiving something handmade feel incredibly special.

#3 It can be more enjoyable than heading to the shops

Let’s be honest, heading to the shops is not always a pleasant experience. If you are shopping at weekends or braving shopping centres in the run-up to Christmas, shopping for gifts can sometimes turn into a nightmare.

When you make the decision to gift something handmade, you don’t need to worry about popular products being out of stock, crazy queues or large crowds during busy periods. Aside from maybe an initial purchase of materials, there is no reason for you to head into the chaos of your local shopping centre.

In addition to this, creative individuals will find that the process of making a gift can be extremely enjoyable and inspiring for future projects. What’s not to love?

#4 It can be cheaper

Although this is not always the case if you need to purchase new materials and supplies, choosing to make a gift with materials you already own can be a fantastic way to save some money without compromising on the quality or thoughtfulness of the gift.

#5 To see their reactions

After all the hard work and thought that has gone into creating the gift, watching the reaction of a loved one can be priceless. Seeing them so happy with something that you crafted especially for them feels incredibly special and definitely makes the time spent on the item completely worth it.

  1. Beautiful artwork! There is nothing better than receiving a handmade gift. Every year I make one of the presents that I give my children for Christmas. I like to crochet, so they usually get blankets or hats. One year, I decided to try my hand at jewelry making and gifted some of those pieces. Thanks for sharing!
